Under the Red Leaves
I made this piece while visiting my family in California. Each morning at my parents house I sat on their front porch while I had breakfast. I ate, read, and watched a new family move in across the street over the course of a week. As I sat there I also noticed the plants in the front garden. I often pay close attention to plants because I'd like to depict them in my work, but they rarely make it into the final version of a piece. This painting took inspiration from a red bush in the front yard, and it's one of the few instances where I'm happy with how the plants turned out. I think this is because while painting I was more absorbed in the process than I have been in a long time. I approached it with no expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed making it as a result.
